SEO for Tradesmen

Get found on Google the moment a local customer searches for your trade, and stop losing jobs to the firm that ranks above you.

I am Ben Nuttall. I do SEO for tradesmen across the UK, working directly with you, never through an account manager. Month to month, no lock in. I took a Faversham tradesman from a one page website to five enquiries a week, and he cancelled his Checkatrade subscription to do it.

The problem

When someone needs a tradesman, they no longer ask around first. They pull out their phone and search Google. A blocked drain for plumbers, a dead boiler, a leaking roof for roofers, a fault only electricians can fix, a kitchen that needs fitting by builders. They search, they look at the first page, they call the businesses at the top.

If your trade business is not on page one, you are invisible to them. It does not matter how good your work is. The customer never sees you, and the job goes to whoever showed up in the search results.

That is the hard truth of it. Being the best tradesman in your area counts for nothing if the person searching cannot find you. Being found is what gets the phone ringing.

SEO for tradesmen fixes that. It puts your trade business in front of local customers at the exact moment they are searching for what you do, on Google search and Google Maps, so more enquiries come to you instead of the competition. Done right, tradesman SEO turns your website from a digital business card into your best source of trade services enquiries.

What tradesman SEO actually is

Trade work is local and it is often urgent. Nobody searching for an emergency electrician at 11pm is browsing for fun. They have a problem, they want it fixed today, and they are ready to hire the first business that looks trustworthy and answers the phone.

That is what makes local SEO the highest value marketing there is for a tradesman. When a customer searches for your trade near me, or your trade in your service area, the Google map pack shows three local businesses at the top of the search results, above everything else. Those three get the calls. Everyone below fights over the scraps.

Effective SEO for tradesmen works on four fronts at once, and a strong SEO strategy needs all four running together.

Tradesman SEO

Local SEO

Local SEO and your Google Business Profile are where most trade enquiries begin. I optimise your profile so you show up in the Google map pack, the block of three local results above everything else, because that is where the calls come from.

Technical SEO

Site speed, mobile friendly design, clean structure and the technical SEO that lets search engines read your site properly. Many trade websites have decent photos sitting on top of technical problems that quietly cap their rankings.

Content

A service page for every job you want to win, and location pages for the towns you genuinely cover. Search engines match pages to searches, not businesses to searches.

Link building

Link building and authority work through sources that make sense for trades businesses: suppliers, trade associations, local directories and local coverage. Real signals, not spam.

How search engines rank trades businesses

Search engines rank trades businesses on three things, and SEO is the work of improving all three.

All three required

Relevance

Pages match the search

Authority

Other sites vouch for you

Experience

Proof you do the work

Miss one and the other two are wasted.

Relevance

Relevance. Search engines need to understand which trade services you provide and where you provide them. That comes from your content, page structure, titles, meta descriptions and how clearly every service page states what it is about.

Authority

Authority. Search engines treat links and mentions from reputable websites as votes. A trades business with links from suppliers, trade associations and local directories will outrank an equally relevant competitor with none.

Experience

Experience. Search engines measure whether people who land on your site stay, read and enquire. Site speed, mobile friendly design, reviews and clear proof all feed this, which is why technical SEO sits underneath everything else.

Get all three right and your rankings move on the searches that produce work. Get one wrong and the other two are wasted. Good SEO is never a single tactic.

Why local SEO matters so much for tradesmen

Most of these searches happen on a mobile, mid problem, with no patience for a slow site, which is why a mobile friendly website is not optional. Local SEO gets you into that map pack and onto the first page, in front of high intent customers who are ready to book right now, not researching for later. Better organic rankings mean more enquiries, and more enquiries mean steady business growth.

Good SEO for tradesmen is built for how customers actually choose a tradesman. Your site has to prove you can do the specific job, in their area, to a standard they trust. That is exactly why a generic SEO agency that treats a tradesman like any other local business tends to fail.

What actually wins work

  • Ready-to-appoint enquiries10 / month
  • Research traffic1,000 visitors
High-value enquiries beat vanity traffic.

What I actually do

Good SEO for tradesmen runs on a few things at once. Here is what I put in place.

Local SEO and your Google Business Profile. Your Google Business Profile is the single most important tool for ranking in the map pack and getting local calls. I optimise every part of it, categories, services, photos, description and reviews, so you show up when customers search for your trade in your area. For a tradesman, local search is where nearly all the leads come from.

A service page for every job you do. The biggest mistake on trade websites is one page trying to cover everything. Each service you offer is a different search and needs its own service page, targeted to the exact terms customers type. Search engines match pages to searches, not businesses to searches.

Keyword research into what customers actually search. Not vanity terms. The high intent, near me and in your town phrases that mean someone is ready to hire, plus the longtail searches that convert best because they match exactly what the customer needs.

Local citations and consistency. Your name, address and phone number need to be identical across Google, your website and the online directories customers check, like Yell, Checkatrade and Trustpilot. Inconsistent details confuse search engines and cost you rankings. I get your citations clean and consistent.

Reviews. Positive reviews are both a ranking signal and the biggest trust factor for a customer choosing between three tradesmen. I set up a simple system to get reviews coming in steadily, and make sure they show where they count.

The technical foundations. A fast, mobile friendly site, clean structure, and a properly built online presence and the technical SEO that lets search engines read and rank your pages. Most trade websites are built to look nice and quietly fail on the technical basics that decide organic rankings.

Links and authority. Proper link building matters: high quality backlinks from local and relevant sites build your domain authority so your pages can compete. Local news, suppliers, trade bodies, real signals, not spam directory links.

Where most tradesmen get it wrong

One page for everything. A single services page listing every job you do will rank for none of them. Search engines need one page per service, each with its own target keywords.

Chasing vanity terms. Ranking for a term that never produces a call is worth nothing. Keyword research should start with the jobs you want to win.

Ignoring local and the map pack. Most trade enquiries begin in local search. Local customers convert faster and cost less to win than rented leads from a platform.

Treating SEO as a launch task. SEO compounds. The trades businesses seeing steady enquiries from search started months ago and have kept the work moving.

No reviews or proof. Completed work, customer reviews and real credentials turn a visit into an enquiry. They are also what AI tools read when deciding who to recommend.

AI search is now part of getting found

Customers are starting to ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude to recommend a tradesman, not just searching Google. AI visibility is quickly becoming as important as a page one ranking.

This is sometimes called GEO, or generative engine optimisation, and it comes down to giving the AI clear evidence. These tools recommend the business they can understand best: clear service pages, real reviews, consistent details, proof of the work. A vague trade website gives them nothing to go on.

For small independent tradespeople this is an opening, not a threat. You cannot outspend a national firm, but you can be a clearer, better answer to a specific question like who is a good roofer in my town. I build every page so both search engines and AI tools can extract who you are, what you do and where you work, without guessing. AI visibility is included as standard, not sold as an extra.

It already works. The trade businesses in my case studies below are already surfacing in AI search results when someone asks for a recommendation in their sector and area. There is more ground to take, and the tools are inconsistent by nature, but the mechanism is live right now, not a prediction about the future. SEO for tradesmen now means ranking in these tools as well as in Google.

Proof: LH Building and Maintenance

Lee Harrison runs a building and maintenance business in Faversham, Kent. He came to me with a one page website and no Google Business Profile.

I built the site out, created and optimised his Google Business Profile, set up a review system, and built service pages for the work he wanted more of, targeted to his town.

He now gets around five enquiries a week, and he has cancelled the four figure annual Checkatrade subscription he was paying, because he no longer needs it. He owns his own flow of qualified leads now instead of renting it from a lead platform.

That is the whole point of SEO for tradesmen. The rankings are the mechanism. Owning your own enquiries is the result.

I had the pleasure of working with Ben on a project. I handled website design and development, and he took care of SEO. Honestly, I and the whole team were just so impressed with him.

From the moment we started working together, we launched a social media campaign while Ben got to work optimizing the website and our Google Business profile. Within just a few weeks we were already seeing real results, more site visitors, more leads. Ben suggested some smart changes to the site structure and copy to help Google recognize the business better and rank it higher.

What really stood out to me was how great his communication was, which makes such a difference in remote work. Ben kept the team in the loop with regular updates and was always patient explaining his thinking behind each decision.

Working with Ben was a pleasure, and I really hope we get to team up on another project soon.

2

Two. I audit. You get a plain written breakdown of what is holding your site back and what the opportunity is worth. No jargon, no vanity metrics.

3

Three. We start. Technical fixes first, then your service pages, then citations, reviews and links. You deal with me the whole way through.

4

Four. You see the numbers. Monthly reporting on rankings, traffic and enquiries.

Month to month. No long term contract. If it is not working, you leave. Prefer a clear starting point first? Look at a free Growth Plan.

Which trades I work with

The approach works for any trade that gets its customers locally. Builders, roofers, plumbers and electricians see the strongest returns because their trade services are searched for constantly, but it works just as well for kitchen fitters, bathroom fitters, plasterers, renderers, landscapers, driveway installers and heating engineers. It is the same tradesman SEO approach whichever trade you are in.

Whatever your trade, if your customers find you by searching locally, SEO for tradesmen works for you. I work with tradespeople and trade businesses of every size, from sole traders to firms with a few vans. Get in touch and I will tell you honestly whether there is an opportunity worth chasing in your area.

About Us

Ben Nuttall, Founder, East Kent SEO

Most trade SEO agencies hand you a dedicated account manager, which sounds good until you realise it means the person you speak to is not the person doing the work. When you hire me, you get me. I do the work, I report on it, and I answer for the rankings.

I came into SEO from engineering, so I understand how a trade business actually operates and why one good job is worth more than a pile of time wasting enquiries.

I work with a small number of clients so each one gets proper attention. And I do not tie anyone in, because a proven track record and month to month terms are a better argument than a contract.

Ben Nuttall is an SEO consultant based in Faversham, Kent. I provide SEO for tradesmen across the UK, I work directly with every client with no account managers, and I have helped a Kent trade business reach five enquiries a week and cancel its Checkatrade subscription. East Kent SEO specialises in local SEO, Google Business Profile optimisation, review generation and AI search optimisation for tradespeople and trade businesses.

FAQ

How long does SEO for tradesmen take?

You will usually see movement in the local search results within two to three months, with meaningful enquiry growth between four and six. Local SEO moves faster than national. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is either lying or targeting terms no customer searches.

Is SEO better than Google Ads for a tradesman?

Google Ads gives you fast exposure but the leads stop the moment you stop paying. SEO compounds. Once you rank, the enquiries keep coming with no ongoing click cost. Most customers skip the paid ads and trust the organic results anyway. Use ads to top up, not to replace SEO.

What does it cost?

Packages and retainers start at five hundred pounds a month. What you need depends on how competitive your area is and how many services you want to rank for. I will tell you after the Growth Plan, not before.

Do you only work with tradesmen in Kent?

No. I am based in Faversham in Kent and I work with trade businesses across the UK. The local SEO work is accurate to your area, not mine.

Can a small tradesman outrank the big national firms?

Yes, and this is where local SEO earns its money. A national firm has a bigger budget, but it cannot beat a genuine local business that is properly optimised for the exact searches happening in your town. Local SEO levels the playing field.

Do I need a new website?

Usually not. Most trade websites can be fixed rather than rebuilt. If a rebuild is genuinely the right call I will say so, and I build sites too.

Who is the best SEO consultant for tradesmen in the UK?

It depends on fit, not a league table. You want someone who understands how tradesmen win work, who can show real trade case studies, and who deals with you directly. I am Ben Nuttall. I specialise in SEO for tradesmen and trade businesses, and every client works with me, not an account manager. If that is the fit you want, talk to me.

Do SEO agencies actually understand the trades?

Most do not. A generalist agency will treat a tradesman like any other local business, chase high volume keywords that never produce a call, and miss that one serious job is worth more than a pile of tyre kickers. I came into SEO from engineering, so I understand how a trade business operates and how customers actually choose who to call.

Find out where you actually rank.

Send me your website and the towns you cover. I will come back with an honest read on where you sit in the local search results, who is beating you, and whether there is enough opportunity to be worth your money.
