SEO for Groundworks Companies

Get found by the main contractors, housebuilders and developers who put groundworks packages out to tender.

I am Ben Nuttall. I do SEO for groundworks companies across the UK, working directly with the owner, never through an account manager. Month to month, no lock in. I came into SEO from engineering, so I understand how a groundworks firm actually wins work.

The problem

Groundworks is won on relationships and tender lists, not on Google. That has always been true, and it is exactly why most groundworks companies are invisible online.

The problem is that the people putting packages out have changed how they find new subcontractors. A project manager who needs a groundworks contractor for a site in a new area, or who has been let down and needs someone fast, searches. They look for a groundworks contractor near the site, they check who has done similar work, and they shortlist from what they find.

If your firm does not show up, you are not on that list. The relationships you already have keep you busy, but every new contractor, every new developer moving into your patch, is finding someone else first.

What SEO for groundworks companies covers

This is not about ranking for a national head term. It is about being the firm that appears when a specific buyer searches for specific groundworks capability in a specific area.

Local and regional visibility

Main contractors search by location because groundworks is priced around haulage and proximity to the site. I make sure your firm shows up for groundworks contractor searches across the regions you actually cover, through your Google Business Profile, local citations and location targeted pages.

A page for every capability you offer

Groundworks is not one service. Muck away and site clearance, bulk and detailed excavation, ground reduction, foundations and footings, drainage and service trenches, sub base and hardstanding, reinforced concrete, attenuation and SUDS, Section 278 and Section 38 highways works. Each is a different search and each deserves its own page, so a buyer looking for that exact capability finds you.

Proof that you can carry the package

Main contractors are appointing on risk as much as price. Case studies of completed schemes, the sectors you work in, the size of contract you can handle, accreditations and health and safety record. This is what turns a search into a call, and it is what an AI tool reads when deciding whether to name you.

Getting found in AI search

Buyers are starting to ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude to recommend a groundworks subcontractor, or to shortlist firms with specific capability in a region, instead of only searching Google.

These tools recommend on evidence and fit. A groundworks company with clear capability pages, real project proof, defined coverage area and consistent details gives an AI something concrete to recommend. A one page site that just says groundworks and civils gives it nothing. I build every page so both search engines and AI tools can extract what you do, what size of work you take on and where you operate, without guessing. It is included as standard.

AI search optimisation for groundworks firms

Proof

I work with construction and civils businesses and get them found for the work they want. My case studies below cover a building contractor, a crane and lifting company and a rendering contractor, each taken from low visibility to ranking and enquiries. The same approach applies to groundworks: define the capability, prove the delivery, get it in front of the buyers who tender the work.

More results across industries are on the case studies page.

I had the pleasure of working with Ben on a project. I handled website design and development, and he took care of SEO. Honestly, I and the whole team were just so impressed with him.

From the moment we started working together, we launched a social media campaign while Ben got to work optimizing the website and our Google Business profile. Within just a few weeks we were already seeing real results, more site visitors, more leads. Ben suggested some smart changes to the site structure and copy to help Google recognize the business better and rank it higher.

What really stood out to me was how great his communication was, which makes such a difference in remote work. Ben kept the team in the loop with regular updates and was always patient explaining his thinking behind each decision.

Working with Ben was a pleasure, and I really hope we get to team up on another project soon.

How it works

1

One. We talk. Thirty minutes, no pitch. I look at where you show up now, who is winning the searches in your regions, and whether there is a realistic opportunity. If there is not, I will say so.

2

Two. I audit. A plain written breakdown of what is holding your site back and what the opportunity is worth.

3

Three. We start. Technical fixes first, then your capability pages and coverage areas, then proof and authority. You deal with me throughout.

4

Four. You see the numbers. Monthly reporting on rankings, traffic and enquiries.

Month to month. No twelve month lock in. If it is not working, you leave. Prefer a fixed one-month push first? Look at the SEO Kickstart.

Why work with me

I came into SEO from engineering, so I understand tenders, packages, retentions and how a groundworks firm actually operates. When you call, you get me, not an account manager and not whoever is free that week. I work with a small number of clients so each gets proper attention, and I do not tie anyone in, because a proven track record and month to month terms are a better argument than a contract.

Ben Nuttall is an SEO consultant based in Faversham, Kent. I provide SEO for groundworks companies and civils contractors across the UK, working directly with every client with no account managers. East Kent SEO builds capability pages and regional coverage for groundworks firms and gets them found by the main contractors, housebuilders and developers who tender the work, in Google and in AI search.

FAQ

Does SEO even work for groundworks companies?

Yes, but not the way it works for a plumber. Nobody searches a big national term. What does happen is main contractors and developers searching for a groundworks contractor in a specific area, and firms being shortlisted from those results. Getting found for those searches, and being recommended by AI tools, is the opportunity.

Do you only work with groundworks companies in Kent?

No. I am based in Faversham in Kent and I work with groundworks and civils firms across the UK. The local and regional targeting is built around your coverage, not mine.

What does it cost?

Packages and retainers start at five hundred pounds a month. What you need depends on how many capabilities and regions you want to cover. I will tell you after the audit, not before.

How long does SEO for groundworks companies take?

You will usually see movement in rankings within two to three months, with meaningful enquiry growth between four and six. Local and regional searches often move faster than broader capability terms. Anyone promising first page in thirty days is either lying or targeting terms nobody searches.

Do I need a new website?

Usually not. Most groundworks websites can be fixed rather than rebuilt. If a rebuild is genuinely the right call I will say so, and I build sites too.

What if I already have an SEO agency?

I will audit what is being done and tell you straight whether it is working. If it is, stay put. Plenty of SEO efforts fail for boring reasons, and it is usually obvious within an hour which ones those are.

Is there a long contract?

No. Work is month to month with no twelve month lock in. If it is not working, you leave. I earn the next month by what I did in the last one.

Will this help me get found in AI search as well as Google?

Yes. Clear capability pages, project proof, defined coverage and consistent details are what AI tools use when they shortlist a groundworks contractor. That work sits inside the same local SEO and technical foundations, not as a separate product.

Find out where you actually rank.

Send me your website and the regions you cover. I will come back with an honest read on where you show up, who is beating you, and whether there is enough opportunity to be worth your money.
